Spring Break on the Pitch
Blogger: Martin Pittman
As Spring break quickly came upon us, I began thinking about how I would spend this break. During spring break my first year I went home and relaxed with my family. Last year, I had the pleasure of escaping to a cabin in the woods for a Midspring Night’s Dream with some friends. I realized how much I have typically traveled over spring break, and this year I found myself forced to remain around campus.
Unfortunately, the Sunday before break began our oxy men's rugby team caught it's first loss which meant we would play Sunday the 16th. I was so frustrated that my spring break plans had come crashing down as I knew we would have practice this week. However, this time spent at school gave me time to reflect on the semester so far, and what I realized is that I practicing with the rugby team was one of the best ways to spend this break. Having joined the team just last semester I have found an amazing group of team mates and coaches within the program.
As one of the most successful men's sports teams at Oxy, The Blackshirts have brought Occidental a lot of positive recognition due to our trips to nationals these last 3 years and our title as the D-3 7s Champions. With this booming tradition and our first loss on Sunday, I found myself and my teammates enjoying some team bonding due to our rigorous practice schedule and staycation times at the pool. However, while this break began with a sour taste, the time I got to spend with my teammates and the victory we earned last Sunday from our hard work made it all worth it. Now we head to the Northern California qualifiers as we continue our journey on the road to nationals.
