Spilt Milk is inspired by the Japanese aesthetic tradition of wabi-sabi, which embraces constant change and natural imperfections. Paul Cherwick’s wood sculptures encapsulate the essence of wabi-sabi: asymmetry and asperity, simple yet intimate. Jon Pylypchuk’s work encompasses concepts that relate to the grotesque and the imperfect. Perfection relates to security and protection through self-sufficiency and resilience in Kari Reardon’s Nature/Nurture, Allure/Alarm installation. The Decorative Protection photography of Bari Ziperstein examines how an object as simple as an iron window bar can relate to the role of the female form in society in their design to simultaneously seduce and repel.
Spilt Milk is an exhibition co-organized by the student’s of Occidental College’s Gallery Practices Seminar and is the final course assignment. Installing Spilt Milk in the Armory’s Community Room is the first time the class exhibition has engaged a public audience beyond the bounds of the campus. The Armory’s Community Room supports a number of local projects and partnerships significant to the organization and its audience. Drawing from both organizations’ local history, Spilt Milk is one in a series of collaborations between the Armory Center for the Arts and Occidental College that are occurring both formally and informally.
The Armory Center Armory Center for the Arts is located at 145 North Raymond Avenue, Pasadena, California, 91103. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Sunday, noon-5pm.
