30 Earn All-SCIAC Track & Field Honors
Pete Bjorklund ’06 and Alex Ramon ’08 won individual conference championship titles, and 28 members of Occidental’s track and field team garnered All-SCIAC team honors at the 2006 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, held April 25 in Redlands.
Bjorklund, of Los Altos, won the discus with a throw of 147 feet 10 inches, while Ramon, of San Jose, was victorious in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:28.44.
The men’s and women’s teams both finished in fourth place, posting gains in throws and distance running. “We’ve certainly turned the corner in those two major event groups,” head coach Troy Engle said. “Those programs have established themselves as amongst – if not the strongest –in the conference on the men’s and women’s sides. The results speak to that.”
Coming in second behind Bjorklund in the discus was senior Mark Bohnstedt (143 feet, 7 inches). Sophomore Chris Kyles added a fifth-place finish. In the shot put, Bjorklund finished second (46 feet, 8 inches), Bohnstedt took third (46 feet, 7 inches), and Kyles finished fourth (43 feet, 7 inches). Trailing Ramon in the steeplechase was fourth-place finisher Galen Smith, a sophomore (9:59.54). In the 5000m, sophomore Kevin Chaves finished second (15:25.02) and senior Nimish Parekh took fourth (15:33.91). Senior Derek Turbin grabbed third in the triple jump with a leap of 45 feet, 2 inches. Bjorklund was sixth in the hurdles with a time of 16.16 seconds.
The women’s effort was led by frosh Kera Bartlett and Molly Frolich. Bartlett was second in the pole vault with a leap of 10 feet, 6 inches and Frolich was second in the shot (38 feet, 1 inch) and sixth in the discus (104 feet, 5 inches). Senior Daisy Demelo finished fourth in the 1,500m and sixth in the 5000m. Cindy Lopez, a senior, was third in the steeplechase with a time of 12:15.08, just ahead of frosh teammate Rachel Keylon (12:25.97). Sophomore Kadiatou Martin was third in the javelin (110 feet, 10 inches), followed by fourth-place finisher Cheryl Prigodich, a senior (110 feet, 2 inches). Martin also was fourth in the high jump.
