A message from President Elam in response to the recent outbreak of violence.

Dear Occidental College Community,

I, like so many of you, am deeply saddened by the horrific violence that has engulfed Israel and Gaza. In keeping with our Occidental mission and values, the College abhors the loss of life.

We recognize that although Occidental may be removed from the conflict by sheer physical distance, this does not mean that we—as individuals or as a community—do not feel an acute sense of emotional investment. Our hearts go out to all those directly and indirectly impacted.

Fundamental to this College’s social justice legacy is fostering an environment that encourages informed discussions, mutual respect, and purposeful engagement. We will work with students, faculty, and staff to best facilitate communication, education, and supportive action.

Students who seek support and assistance may reach out directly to offices such as the Emmons Wellness Center and Office for Religious and Spiritual Life. The Dean of Students Office and International Programs Office will also be available.

Employees who want mental or emotional well-being resources may take advantage of the Employee Assistance Program.

In these uncertain times, please know that you can lean on us.

Sincerely,

President Elam
