The Boren Scholarship funds undergraduate study abroad programs to study less commonly taught languages in world regions deemed critical to U.S. security.

2024-2025 Deadlines:

Internal deadline: January 15, 2025

National deadline: January 29, 2025

Purpose:

The Boren Scholarship Program provides funding for undergraduate study abroad programs to study less commonly taught languages in world regions deemed critical to U.S. security, including Africa, Asia, Central and European Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Funding recipients agree to work for the federal government after graduation for one year in an area related to national security.

Eligibility:

In order to be eligible, a student must:

- be a U.S. citizen at time of application

- be planning to study abroad in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand

- be currently enrolled in college and planning to be enrolled at Oxy or graduate school during the study abroad term

Preference is given to candidates who are planning to study abroad for at least 6 months (which could involve combining a semester + a summer of study), who propose study in Boren's preferred countries and languages, and who are highly motivated to work for the federal government.

Campus Evaluation Process:

All Boren Scholarship applicants must apply first through Oxy. To apply, complete your online Boren application (including asking your recommenders to submit recommendations) by our internal deadline of January 15, 2025, and send an email to fellowships@oxy.edu indicating that your application is complete. You will then be contacted to set up a meeting in which we interview you and give you some final advice on your application.

Please contact Jennifer Locke (jlocke@oxy.edu) with any questions.
