Ima Odong '21 will be providing academic and community support to NYU Shanghai students via writing tutoring and partnering with a university department on a specific institutional enrichment project.
Why did you choose to apply for this award?
For one, I was really eager to spend extended time outside of the US after my abroad program was cut short due to the pandemic. I also wanted to continue teaching and doing peer education in some capacity, as well as have the time and space to write.
Briefly describe the work you will be doing on your fellowship.
I'll be providing academic and community support to NYU Shanghai students via writing tutoring and partnering with a university department on a specific institutional enrichment project. I'm also going to be working on an original writing project for the duration of the fellowship.
What are you most looking forward to during your time as a fellow?
I'm really looking forward to connecting with the students and finding my place in Shanghai.
How have your experiences at Oxy prepared you to apply for this award?
My experience as a writing tutor and writing fellow through Oxy's Writing Center has greatly prepared me for the work I'm going to be doing. I feel like I have a good starting point in terms of academic writing knowledge and my personal writing pedagogy. I also think that my experience in various aspects of student life, peer mentorship, and community engagement have prepared me to be flexible and to want to connect deeply with students and staff where I'm able to.
What advice would you give future applicants about the application process?
I would definitely say to give yourself at least a couple months not only to complete the application, but to learn as much as you can about the program itself and the experience of previous fellows. Make sure to have at least one other person read your short answer responses and writing sample!
