Ngoc Tran - Gilman Awardee

Ngoc Tran '26 was awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and will expand on her work in Korea this summer.

Why did you choose to apply for this award?

I chose to apply for the Gilman Scholarship for its comprehensive curriculum, global education framework, and the opportunity to immerse myself in a culture that has long intrigued me. In addition to the economic landscape and evolving societal trends in Asia, the region provides the ideal environment to explore career options, particularly in global business.

Briefly describe the work you will be doing on your fellowship.

I will promote business professional development and study abroad opportunities to first-generation students, women of color, and other marginalized groups. By organizing workshops and panels that foster open discussions, I aim to demystify the study abroad process and empower my peers to pursue global opportunities with confidence.

What are you most looking forward to during your time as a fellow?

During my time as a Gilman scholar, I am most looking forward to immersing myself in new cultural and professional environments that will expand my global perspective aboard. I am excited about the opportunity to work on meaningful projects, collaborate and form meaningful connections with diverse peers and professionals, and apply my academic knowledge in Economics to real-world challenges.

How have your experiences at Oxy prepared you to apply for this award?

Through my involvement with the Women of Economics (WOE), First Generation, Low-Income Student Union (FLISU), and Viets of Oxy (VOO), I had the opportunity to connect with a previous Gilman scholar who provided valuable guidance throughout my application process.

What advice would you give future applicants about the application process?

My advice to future applicants is to approach the application process with determination, resilience, and authenticity. Start early so you have enough time to reflect on your experiences, articulate your goals clearly, overcome unexpected obstacles, and apply for multiple rounds depending on the semester or season of the scholarship application cycle. Breaking the process into smaller tasks and considering alternative routes to achieve the same goal can also make it more manageable. Seek feedback from mentors, peers, or advisors who can help you refine your responses and ensure your application highlights your strengths and unique perspective.

Most importantly, stay true to your story and motivations. Share why this opportunity matters to you and how it aligns with your aspirations. Remember, challenges in the process are opportunities to grow, and persistence will pay off in the end!
