(Leer en Español) An update from the president on plans for postponing this year’s Commencement.
To the Class of 2020:
Since we graduated our first class in 1893, there has been no academic tradition at Occidental more treasured or more enduring than Commencement. Each spring, rain or shine, peace or war, our community has gathered in Hillside Theater in the presence of family and friends to celebrate the academic and personal achievements of each senior class; the transformative power of an Oxy liberal arts education; and each new generation’s commitment to the public good.
Thus it is with the deepest regret that I write to tell you that Occidental’s 138th Commencement ceremony on May 17 must be postponed to a date to be decided. In light of the current open-ended state order barring all non-essential gatherings, the latest estimates of how long the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic will persist, and our own commitment to protecting the health and safety of our community, postponement is the only responsible choice.
As to the question of what comes next, I want to assure you we will address this with the level of diligence and attention it deserves. No senior class in history has had to endure a mid-semester disruption of this magnitude. I know you hold dear the vision of walking across the stage to receive your diploma, of hearing your name announced as family and friends cheer, and of celebrating community and family at cultural grads. We want to provide that moment you’ve been working toward these past four years. Once the pandemic has passed, we will make sure that the Class of 2020 is appropriately celebrated in person, not just for its academic achievements but for its resilience and perseverance in the face of extraordinary adversity.
Your voice matters. In the days ahead, we will be surveying the members of the Class of 2020 about a variety of Commencement options. We will also include student representatives along with faculty and staff as we expand our planning committee to focus on these new alternatives. I also want to assure you that virus or no virus, degrees will be duly conferred on every senior who has met all of their degree requirements—the manner and timing of which will also be discussed by the committee.
This is not how any of us imagined the spring semester ending. I want you to know that everyone—including the board of trustees and our incoming president, Dr. Harry Elam Jr.—share my commitment to honoring you as you deserve to be honored. I want you to know that we will continue to keep you informed and involved as we work our way through this, confident that we will find our way to the other side, together.

Desde que graduamos a nuestra primera generación en 1893, no ha habido tradición académica en Occidental más preciada o más duradera que la Ceremonia de Graduación. Cada primavera, llueva o truene, nuestra comunidad se ha reunido en el Teatro Hillside en presencia de familiares y amigos para celebrar los logros académicos y personales de cada estudiante de ultimo año; el poder transformador de una educación de artes liberales; y el compromiso de cada nueva generación con el bien público.
Por lo tanto, con el más profundo pesar escribo para comunicarles que la ceremonia de graduación de la generación 138, prevista para el 17 de mayo, debe posponerse hasta nueva fecha por determinar. A la luz de la actual orden estatal que restringe todas las reuniones no esenciales, las últimas estimaciones de cuánto tiempo persistirá la pandemia del coronavirus COVID-19 y nuestro propio compromiso de proteger la salud y la seguridad de nuestra comunidad, el aplazamiento es la única opción responsable.
En cuanto a la pregunta de qué va a proseguir, quiero asegurarles que abordaremos esto con el nivel de diligencia y atención que merece. Ninguna generación a punto de graduarse había padecido una alteración de esta magnitud a mitad del semestre en la historia de Oxy. Sé que guardas la ilusión de caminar por el escenario para recibir tu diploma, de escuchar que anuncian tu nombre mientras familiares y amigos te aplauden, y de celebrar a la comunidad y a la familia en las graduaciones culturales. Queremos darte ese momento en el que has estado trabajando estos últimos cuatro años. Una vez que la pandemia haya pasado, nos aseguraremos de que la Clase de 2020 sea adecuadamente celebrada en persona, no sólo por sus logros académicos, sino por su resistencia y perseverancia frente a una adversidad extraordinaria.
Tu voz importa. En los próximos días, encuestaremos a los miembros de la Clase de 2020 sobre distintas opciones para la ceremonia de graduación. También incluiremos representantes estudiantiles junto con profesores y personal, a medida que ampliamos nuestro comité de planificación que se concentrará en nuevas alternativas. También quiero asegurarles que con o sin virus, los títulos serán debidamente otorgados a cada graduado que haya cumplido con todos los requisitos de su licenciatura -- la forma y el momento también será discutido por el comité.
Así no es como ninguno de nosotros imaginó el final del semestre de primavera. Quiero que sepan que todos, incluyendo la junta directiva y nuestro presidente entrante, el Dr. Harry Elam Jr., comparten mi compromiso de honrarlos como merecen ser honrados. Seguiremos manteniéndolos informados e involucrados de nuestros avances, confiados en que juntos encontraremos como sobrepasar esto.
