Join us for a conversation with ISLA Scholar in Residence Gustavo Arellano and Jose R. Ralat, the taco editor for Texas Monthly who just published a book called "American Tacos!"
Gustavo Arellano is a features writer for the Los Angeles Times, covering Southern California everything and a bunch of the West and beyond. He previously worked at the OC Weekly, where he was an investigative reporter for 15 years and editor for six, wrote a celebrated column called "¡Ask a Mexican!" and is the author of several books, including Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America. He’s the child of two Mexican immigrants, one of whom came to this country in the trunk of a Chevy.
Jose R. Ralat is Texas Monthly‘s taco editor. He has written for the Dallas Observer, Texas Highways, D Magazine, Eater, among other media outlets. He was formerly the food and drink editor at Cowboys & Indians magazine. He has been featured by the New Yorker, Remezcla, Telemundo, and the James Beard Award-winning First We Feast websites. The New York Times has called Ralat “an expert on the folklore of the taco.”
