Emmons Wellness Center is hosting Dr. Donna Barnes, who will present on Suicide Awareness Among College Students on Thursday, March 25 at 4 pm (PDT).
Emmons Wellness Center welcomes Dr. Donna Barnes, who will speak on Suicide Awareness Among College Students. Dr. Barnes is a certified Master Trainer for suicide prevention and intervention, and is the co-founder and President of the National Organization for People of Color against Suicide (NOPCAS). She teaches suicide risk management for the College of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry at Howard University. During her presentation, Dr. Barnes will discuss the rates of suicide in the past 10 years among persons aged 15 - 24, people of color, and suicide on college campuses. She will explore what we know, what we don't know, what might work, and what does not work. And finally, she will review some techniques on how to provide support to a suicidal person. At the end she will host a Q&A session.

Dr. Barnes is currently Founder and CEO of DHB Wellness & Associates, LLC where she conducts life coaching, grief recovery, and suicide prevention training on suicide risk management. Dr. Barnes trains faculty, staff and students as well as the community on how to recognize the signs of someone who is in a suicidal crisis. She has published many articles, chapters, and given presentations on the topic across the country. She is the author of the Truth About Suicide published by DWJ books in New York as part of the "truth about series..." for middle school and high school students. Dr. Barnes has been featured on several radio shows and media outlets including NPR, CNN, The Huffington Post and The Washington Post.
