Join us for a workshop with Feminist.AI.
This workshop is a part of Feminist.AI and poieto’s larger Search programming, “Encode” series (2019-present). Participants will come together to re-imagine “Search.” through discussion and prototyping. The workshop draws inspiration from Professor Safiya U. Noble’s 2018 book, Algorithms of Oppression, which critiques the racist and sexist search results about marginalized groups online, and the algorithms that continue to propagate, and profit from, these misrepresentations.
In our workshop, we will utilize poieto, a collaborative design tool for emerging technologies, to guide participants in envisioning a future of search, outside of detrimental algorithmic bias.
Feminist.AI works to put technology into the hands of makers, researchers, thinkers and learners to amplify unheard voices and create more accessible AI for all. They create spaces where intergenerational BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ womxn and non-binary folks can gather to build tech together that is informed by cultures, identities and experiences. They engage with Intersectional feminism to spotlight our stories, inventions, designs and leadership, and to co-create more equitable futures.
Feminist.AI was founded in 2016 as a community-based research and design group focused on critical making in response to hegemonic AI. They proposed an alternative to the lack of diversity in AI design and development by co-designing intelligent products, experiences, and futures from a feminist posthumanist perspective.
Feminist.AI believes that individuals should be able to understand and have a role in how technology affects their daily lives and communities. Their projects and related programs are for individuals at any level of exposure to artificial intelligence (AI) thinking. They approach each project by questioning assumptions embedded in AI and machine learning (ML) modeling and design approaches, while co-creating technologies, in order to make AI thinking accessible to all.
