Hello incoming students!
We at the Hameetman Career Center (HCC) are so excited to meet you on campus in just a few weeks. The HCC is Occidental College's primary resource for career preparation and internships. We believe it's never too early to begin thinking about life after Oxy and to set yourself up for success.
First-Year Student Employment Preparation (STEP) program
As a work-study eligible student, we invite you to participate in our First-Year Student Employment Preparation (STEP) program. The STEP program provides a limited number of paid on-campus jobs exclusively for first-year students who have received a work-study financial aid award. You can watch this video to learn more.
To be eligible for STEP, you must attend two workshops—Resume Writing and Interview Preparation—so that you can meet the requirements before STEP applications open in the fall.
• Mon, 8/7 : Resume Writing Workshop (3-4 p.m.), Interview Preparation Workshop (4:15-5:15 p.m.)
• Tues, 8/8 : Resume Writing Workshop (10-11 a.m.), Interview Preparation Workshop (11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m.)
• Wed, 8/9 : Resume Writing Workshop (12:00-1:00pm), Interview Preparation Workshop (1:15-2:15 p.m.)

As a work-study award recipient, the primary source for student job postings is the Human Resources Student Employment webpage. However, STEP jobs are exclusively offered through the HCC and are posted on Handshake. The STEP hiring process is competitive and obtaining a job is not guaranteed for all students. If you are hired for any on-campus job, you will need to provide certain documents that establish both your identity and employment authorization. You can review a list of Human Resources' acceptable documents here.
Handshake
In addition to registering for virtual workshops and becoming eligible for STEP, please use the rest of the summer to explore Handshake, Occidental's online career management platform. Once you activate your account with your Oxy email and password, you will be able to make appointments with a career advisor, register for events and explore HCC resources.
You’ll also be able to build your Handshake profile by adding any previous work or volunteer experience. A complete profile will increase your chances of being contacted by a recruiter for a job or internship opportunity.
