Sabrina Degnan and Austin DeWitz both took home SCIAC Field Athlete of the Year honors on Tuesday after standout senior seasons.
Degnan, a thrower from Atascadero, won the javelin and hammer, finished second in the shot put, and fifth in the discus at the 2019 SCIAC Championships.
DeWitz, a jumper and sprinter from Oregon City, Ore., won his third consecutive SCIAC Championship in the high jump, along with the triple jump and 110m hurdles.
The honor caps two incredible careers. Both are two-sport athletes and will be recognized later this month with Oxy’s Roy Dennis Scholar-Athlete Award, which is the college’s top athletic honor.
DeWitz also led Oxy’s basketball team to the SCIAC Championship game this year and has been an All-American in the high jump.
Degnan was the captain of the women’s volleyball team and is a national qualifier and the school record holder in the javelin.
"We’re so proud that Austin and Sabrina have been chosen as the SCIAC Field Event Athletes of the Year," Oxy head coach Rob Bartlett said. "They both thoroughly deserve these accolades for their performances in both our regular season and during the 2019 SCIAC Championships. I can’t imagine a better way for both Austin and Sabrina to finish their SCIAC careers."
Athletes that finished in the top 3 in their respective events at the SCIAC Championship are named All-SCIAC.
