A 4.4 earthquake hit the Highland Park area this afternoon, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

If you feel shaking or get an earthquake alert, immediately:

  • DROP where you are, onto your hands and knees.
  • COVER your head and neck with one arm or hand. If one is available, crawl under a sturdy desk or table, or next to an
  • interior wall.
  • HOLD ON and remain covered and on the ground until the shaking stops.
  • Walker and wheelchair users should LOCK their mobility aids.
  • DO NOT stand under a doorway or run outside.

After the earthquake:

  • Expect aftershocks, and drop, cover, and hold on if an aftershock hits.
  • If you are in a damaged building, go outside and move away from the building.
  • If trapped, send a text or bang on a pipe or wall.
