Lummis Days Premiers “Con Safos: Reflections of Life in The Barrio”

For four turbulent years between 1968 and 1972, the Lincoln Heights-based literary magazine, Con Safos: Reflections of Life in the Barrio, provided a platform for writers, poets, artists, cartoonists and photographers who captured the experiences of the barrio and the rumblings of the nascent Chicano movement that burst upon the nation’s consciousness during that era.

Poetry Workshops: ISLA + Lummis Day Festival "A Machine Made of Words" with Rick Bursky

UCLA Extension Writers' Program and USC Adjunct Professor of Poetry Rick Bursky leads free poetry workshop, "A Machine Made of Words"

The great American poet William Carlos Williams referred to a poem as a "machine made out of words" -- it has its own secret mechanisms and power. Rick Bursky's workshop will help you evolve a new poem and concentrate on trimming extra words, focusing on the language itself and not simply the "story."
