As promised, an update regarding the demonstration encampment recently constructed on Oxy’s quad.

Following the evolving situation last evening and this morning, we can report that this demonstration has remained peaceful.

We have been communicating with the demonstration organizers to clarify expectations about maintaining a secure environment, complying with College policies and instructions, and avoiding disruption of events and campus operations.

We have decided to permit, for now, these encampments and to provide the demonstrators with an opportunity to express their positions. However, this permission will be revoked if the demonstration does not remain peaceful and participants do not comply with the directions of Campus Safety and other College officials.

The College has also put additional security measures in place, including Campus Safety regularly patrolling the quad to monitor safety concerns. Emmons Wellness Center staff will also be distributing health and hygiene materials to ensure students have their basic health needs met. We strongly caution against inviting outside groups to participate in the demonstration

We continue to encourage everyone to make use of available resources on campus. Students who seek support and assistance may reach out directly to offices such as the Emmons Wellness Center, the Office for Religious and Spiritual Life and the Civil Rights & Title IX Office. The Dean of Students Office will also be available to address any concerns related to your academic experience.

Employees and faculty who want mental or emotional wellbeing resources may take advantage of the Employee Assistance Program.

Best,
President Elam
