Spanish Studies

Occidental’s Spanish program provides you with an analytical grasp of the traditions and complexities of the Spanish-speaking world.

The rich cultural and literary expressions of Spain, Latin America, and the Spanish-speaking US provide for a classroom environment where students are immersed in intensive language use to build strong conversational skills. In addition to extensive study abroad options, our location in Los Angeles provides endless opportunities for you to use Spanish interactively. We also offer a linguistics track within the Spanish major. Many Spanish majors have received research and English teaching assistant Fulbright awards or have gone on to participate in NALCAP, a program sponsored by the Spanish government in which young U.S. college graduates assist teachers in Spain with teaching English.

Through various classes at Oxy, I have had my eyes opened as to how powerful and impactful literature can be. I feel so lucky to have learned about sociolinguistics as well. I feel like it is the perfect combination of the things I am most passionate about: Spanish, equity, and diplomacy.
