Where should I stay when visiting my student?
Local hotel accommodations may be found in Eagle Rock, Glendale, Pasadena and South Pasadena. Please inquire about discounts when making your reservation at these hotels. There are plenty of other hotels in the area as well.
Where can I find information about campus events? The academic calendar?
Campus events are listed on the College calendar. The current Academic Calendar is available under the Academics tab of the website. Oxy's social media accounts are another great place to keep up with the latest Oxy happenings.
What's good in the neighborhood?
Oxy sits in northeast Los Angeles, on the border between Eagle Rock and Highland Park. To the north of campus, Eagle Rock is home to the annual Eagle Rock Music Festival, L.A.'s largest independent music festival. Students can take advantage of everything from glow-in-the-dark bowling at All Star Lanes to a yoga class at Mockingbird Yoga. To the south is Highland Park, which LA Weekly deemed the greatest neighborhood in Los Angeles. Our students especially enjoy the food options, and the many unique clothing and record stores. On the second Saturday of each month, Angelenos from around the city converge on Highland Park for the NELA Artwalk, which is a great opportunity to get to know local artists and galleries. You can get the scoop on Highland Park from Oxy students themselves in this Oxy Students' Guide to Highland Park video.
Where are places to eat near campus?
There are so many great eateries nearby that we couldn't possibly list them all, but here is a nice primer on the foodie heaven that is Eagle Rock/Highland Park.
What else is there to do in L.A. while we're visiting?
If you want to venture out and take in all that Los Angeles has to offer, here are some great ideas. L.A. has a little something for everybody. And, there are multiple ways to get around the city.
There are many different ways to approach Occidental by car, plane, bike or boat. Occidental College is located in northeast Los Angeles in the community of Eagle Rock, between Pasadena on the east and Glendale on the west. Our street address is 1600 Campus Rd., Los Angeles, CA 90041. The campus is 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles, less than an hour from the beaches and within two hours of local mountain resorts and ski areas. When you get here, you can find your way around with a handy campus map.
When is Homecoming & Family Weekend?
Come to campus in October and experience Homecoming & Family Weekend with your student: attend classes, athletic events, festivities and a tailgate BBQ before the traditional Homecoming football game. Find out more here.
The Office of Admission offers tours and information sessions Monday through Friday year-round. Saturday morning tours are also offered between Labor Day and early December, and in April. Our student-led tour is an approximately one hour and 15 minute walk through campus. Contact the Office of Admission to register your family for a tour.
