Letter from the Dean of Students

It is with great joy that I welcome you to the Occidental College community. At Oxy, we are committed to fostering an environment in which you can grow intellectually and interpersonally. We are also committed to ensuring that our community is safe and healthy.

As a member of the Occidental College student community, you have both rights and the responsibilities that come with being a part of this community.  We expect all of our students to be productive members of the college and we expect one another to represent Oxy well, even when away from campus. Safety is a shared responsibility. Many of the expectations we have set forth have been established in order to maintain a safe and healthy community for everyone.

In the Oxy Student Handbook, you will find the most important policies to you as a student.  Please read them carefully.  You are responsible for knowing these policies so that you are clear on what we expect of all students regarding academics, housing, alcohol, sexual respect, technology usage, and every facet of campus life.  Revisions to policies may periodically occur during the year. If that happens, you’ll be notified about significant changes.

If you have questions about any portion of the Handbook, please contact me and I’ll be happy to meet with you.

The staff and faculty at Occidental are here to support and encourage you, and to challenge you to grow and to help you achieve in all areas of life.  I hope you’ll partner with me to have an outstanding year!

Warmly,

Vivian Santiago

Interim Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students
